Colleen decided to leave her firm and take on the law world as an independent Barrister + Solicitor. The first order of things was that she wanted a "severe" looking business card, with a white/navy scheme of some sort.

Embracing the directive I wanted to make something that was sophisticated and timeless but modern, dare I say whimsically severe.

All Barrister/Solicitor cards and door plates seem to use a serif, so I went with a san serif, simple type setting with letter press execution. They turned out better than I imagined.

I'm in the process of organizing images and hope to have a few galleries up and running soon. Until then, here is a sampling of some of my favorites. More to come...

If you have time for other light-viewing enjoyment, here is more photographic work.

Yep that's the ex-First Lady! Last term's White House photographer and now award-winning documentary/editorial photographer, not to mention an old graduate school classmate of mine, Krisanne Johnson wanted a simple and bold identity/site. Her ask: something that was neutral enough to frame her diverse work but didn't look like a template design. She wanted a stamp and style.

		<description>
I spent a few weeks working with the interactive team at the CBC including conceptualizing and art directing the online launch of one of their new and more popular shows "Being Erica".

The prelaunch component consisted of two microsites that abstractly dealt with themes of the show.

The first microsite was based around regret. It scraped twitter looking for #i regret (and multiple versions of that) and pulled them into the stage. But it also allowed users anywhere to type in a regret directly on the site and attach it to a category (food, love, money, etc).

There were options to change the views, see the regrets as just text or as a percentage graph.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/456164/cbc.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" /&#62;

The second microsite acted like a fortune cookie. Wherever you clicked with your mouse (or finger), the refrigerator magnets would come together to form a random famous inspiring quote.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/456164/cbc2.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" /&#62;

WEBSITE DESIGN
Small site design for "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". They wanted it to be organic and fun, echo the playfulness of the show.

		<description>
Justin Cone, of Motionographer.com, produced an amazing design conference featuring top creative thinkers and designers. He asked, friend/colleague Vince Diga and I to art direct the branding which we wanted to be bold and image-driven.

WEBSITE
Simple and photographic -- the goal was for the site to feel creative and editorial.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/455910/f5.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" align="left" /&#62;

PROGRAM
We had been to enough conferences ourselves that we wanted the program to be small enough to fit into the conference lanyards. We didn't want it to be an extra thing people had to carry around. In order to do that, we created an accordian style booklet.

If there had been enough room, we had wanted to turn part of it into an activity book, a way to keep people occupied during intermissions or a place to write notes, etc.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/455910/f5program_3.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="334" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/455910/f5program3.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="244" align="left" /&#62;

ANIMATION
The animation had to be simple enough to frame the diversity of work that was being shown. Each speaker had two photos associated with them, one wider and one more macro.

The animations start with variations of a word that starts with "RE:" and ends with a speaker's name along with a pithy one-iner. The idea was to have each slate be a short conversation and call to action.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/455910/f5animation01.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="379" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/455910/f5animation02.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="379" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/455910/f5animation03.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="378" align="left" /&#62;

Some animation examples. If you're interested in seeing more, you can find them all here.

OUTTAKES
With more time + money we had thought about creating other items that had an interactive vibe to them.

I worked with friend Kate LaRue to pitch an enRoute Film Festival identity and brand direction. Every year Air Canada hosts a short film festival that premieres on their airlines entertainment systems.

We each developed several concepts and logos and showed how they might be expanded on.

Sadly the only thing that moved forward was the tagline I pitched "Stories That Move" -- regardless, I liked it enough to post a few of the stronger concepts. Enjoy!

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/441654/eff01b.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="297" align="left" /&#62;

Alternate logo designs that I liked.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/441654/eff01c.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="279" align="left" /&#62;

Concept 01: 2d Canadiana
A simple, retro, iconic series. Emphasizing the Canadian-made short films, this campaign plays on the idea of graphic collectibles.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/441654/eff02b.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="845" align="left" /&#62;

Concept 02: World of Reels
This abstract and dynamic option conveys the magical and inspiring feeling that both travel and film elicit. The graphic can be both a simple image or a complex pattern depending on the application.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/441654/eff05.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="496" align="left" /&#62;

The CBC was launching a new low fi web show called "The Motion Show". It was a skateboard variety program.

Users zoomed into the site hosted on a skateboard. The menu was a hand that held a hand-written list and would move to the center of the page when rolled over.

Ten15 was a collaborative labor of love I started that lasted for almost 2 years.
At 10:15 am every day, we asked people to take a photo of whatever it was they were doing wherever they were doing it.

Although it was only built using a simple wordpress template, it grew into a really diverse community. It was interesting to see the trends and patterns that developed as well as the cross global photographic conversations.

I still hope to get it back up and running. This new design, which encourages more community interaction and expands into video and text entries, awaits in the wings.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/438902/ten1502.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="1056" align="left" /&#62;

01HUNDRED DAYS
After being live for 100 days, the photos were published in a calendar format. When you click on a day, you get a mosaic of what was happening around the world at 10:15 am.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/438902/ten15100days.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="311" align="left" /&#62;
&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/438902/ten15100days2.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="411" align="left" /&#62;

THE GMT PROJECT
On some days, we'd put out a call to action to the community and create theme days. For example, we'd ask for self portraits, or photos of something red.

One of my favorite theme days was on 10/15/08. We did the GMT project where we asked everyone in the community to take a photo at 10:15 am GMT time. We wanted to catch one minute in the world.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/438902/gmt.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="687" align="left" /&#62;

TEN15 VOTE
And what's better than 10:15 am? Throwing in a 10:15 pm. With the hoopla of elections, we wanted to do a TEN15 vote day. For this we asked people to shoot a 10:15 a.m. and p.m. to reveal what they were doing as the big day was going down.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/438902/vote.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="687" align="left" /&#62;

BUTTON PACKAGING
We invited different designers to create ten15 buttons.

&#60;img src="http://c0573862.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/1/0/30723/438902/ten15.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="333" align="left" /&#62;

Part of the new site design includes a full photo intro page that shows the most recently uploaded 10:15 image.

Burger expert Kevin Pang approached me about creating a kitchy identity and look for his new food show with The Chicago Tribune. The plot is simple, he goes around with celebrity guest hosts in search of the ultimate cheeseburger. Nominated for a James Beard Award in the Multimedia Food Feature category.

Friend Vince Diga and I had a lot of fun with this. We created an authentic Cheeseburger Show hamburger wrapper, among other things. The open and show graphics are created out of cut-up diner menus, burger wrappers and hand-drawn illustrations to create a low-fi and retro feel.

The elements and textures were repurposed for online and print directions.
